What does the Teen Wolf ratings tell us?

clauxx:

So, instead of watching Teen Wolf I was tracking the ratings and playing with math. These are some facts I got from playing with numbers.

The average ratings for all the seasons are:

Season 1 – 1,73
Season 2 – 1,69
Season 3A – 1,78
Season 3B – 2,06
Season 4 – 1,61

This means that Season 4…

I remember when Jeff told Suaine to stop watching if she didn’t like it anymore or didn’t like the direction he was taking HIS show in.Looks like people have started taking his advice. Look at that steady downward spiral. Bet MTV is regretting having green lit S5 now. Even though it got the go ahead, that doesn’t mean it can’t still be cancelled at this point. Because TW is an expensive show to make for them. Much more expensive than their reality BS stuff. So it needs better ratings to justify its existence. And um… well… just look at that bright red line.Oops. Maybe you shouldn’t have mouthed off to your fans like that, Jeff.

Please note that the rapidly falling red line is the current season of Teen Wolf, the one that the majority of my dash (and apparently of the viewers in general) has given up on watching. This week’s episode was supposed to be the big lead up to the extra-long finale, and I was fully expecting it to rise in the ratings, as nearly every season has done in the final two episodes. Instead, it’s the second lowest rating of the entire show, with that big yellow dip being a season 1 anomaly.
So, Teen Wolf and Jeff Davis: this is what happens when you completely mangle the tone and characterizations in your show and then tell your loyal, passionate, free marketing powerhouse fans to fuck off. We do.

#you gave us a fuck you we just gave you a fuck you back#enjoy ~pleasing yourself~ with your writing all by yourself#you could have had an amazing show completely different from everything else and thats not afraid of being it#but you decided not to#and decided to /use/ your show’s fans when it was convenient and then just treating them like shit#you had it coming#so at the end of the day you’re just getting what you deserve#its sad because this show used to make me really happy and you turned everything related to it into absolute shit#and just made me despise everything that it is now#so have fun#hasta la vista (jensensackles)

i know you guys are mad but don’t you realize the whole show might get canceled

Yes, and we are enoying it. Without us, the show wouldn’t be here now anyway. THEY treated us like shit and told us to fuck off, and we are doing just that.

To the earlier person’s point, the fans who are angry and/or have largely stopped watching are perfectly aware of what might happen.
However, here’s the thing that you, and a lot of other people, are missing.Television is a business. Yes, it is a business that involves art, but it is fundamentally a business.
No one can force another person to patronize a business that does not make them feel welcome. Put this in context. Imagine TW is a restaurant. I love the food, I love the staff, I love the other patrons I see daily, but then the owner randomly decides he’s not going to serve my favorite dishes anymore. He hires new staff who seem nice, but incredibly awkward and, sometimes, outright rude (however much they don’t seem to mean it). The head chef loses his patience one day and rants about the customers who love a dish he hates, tells them they’re patronizing the restaurant for the wrong reasons, and seems to give up all pretense of liking anyone who orders that dish. Worse, his mother comes in every day and does the same. Now, granted, some of the old patrons have been excessively rude and hostile, but this behavior is not directed solely at them. It’s universal, directed at anyone who speaks up.And people speak up, but the owner ignores them and completely renovates the restaurant. He changes the design, changes the names of the dishes on the menu (though the dishes are, by and large, comprised of all the same ingredients but with minimal changes to appearance), and, around the same time, one of his most prominent and popular staff members abruptly quits.
Though she says it’s her choice, we later find out that the business has permitted a toxic atmosphere behind the scenes for she and her other female coworker. A similar atmosphere that’s been bothering the head chef and, possibly, is the real source of his anger, but he can’t actually say so without offending the owner.
Okay, I’m kind of really belaboring the point, here, but would it be any surprise if that restaurant started hemorrhaging  customers? Because that’s what’s happened to Teen Wolf. It’s not the fault of the fans that left if the show fails. They’ve been VERY vocal and VERY honest about their opinions and it simply is not their responsibility to keep the show on the air. That is the responsibility of Jeff Davis and his staff. If the show fails, it is because that Jeff forgot the important thing about a business: no customers, no profit. For whatever reasons, he decided to retool his series. He seemed to gamble on the chance that he would be able to replace any fans that didn’t like the changes.
Except he hasn’t. He drove off those fans (yes, apparently primarily sterek fans) and no one came in to replace them. That’s on him. That’s his choice. It’s not the fans responsibility and they have no obligation to save him from himself. Now here’s the real kicker. It’s not just sterek that has driven fans off.
I didn’t stop watching just because I ship Sterek. I stopped watching because A: it was quite obvious that’s what they wanted and B: I don’t want to support Jeff Davis.
He’s soundly mistreated Tyler Posey for years (and I fully believe that’s where Tyler’s frustration *really* comes from. That doesn’t change the hurt i feel because of his actions, but I do understand it) and I suspect did the same of Crystal and Holland.
The stories that came out of the atmosphere on the set seemed patronizing at best where they’re concerned and then there’s the attitude that seems to have emerged around Arden Cho. She’s been shunted to one side in most of the PR work in favor of Shelley Hennig and that shouldn’t have happened. And don’t even get me started on what he did to Sinqua Walls & Gage Golightly. I will rage for DAYS.
Not to mention, as a bisexual woman, I don’t particularly enjoy finding out that Jeff, like so many others in the Gay Community (as opposed to the Queer Community, believe me they’re different things) treats my identity a joke. Too many gay and lesbian people erase and belittle the bisexual identity; having him make a major character in the show bisexual would have been *huge* in that context. Instead, he fell in line with the status quo and, worse, but kept it vague enough, long enough, that he could coax a few more viewers out of it. I get enough of that from the heterosexual community. I don’t need it from someone who’s supposed to understand and know better.
And yes, I didn’t like some of the story choices this year, and that’s not a crime or a betrayal of the show. None of this is, in fact. Yes, we are perfectly aware that the show may be cancelled because of all this, but here’s the kicker. It hasn’t been Teen Wolf for a long time. Actually, it never was.
It’s not the fault of fans that we’re no longer patronizing this business.I’d suggest speaking to Jeff Davis, but good luck finding him. It seems that Mr. Davis is no longer interested in speaking to fans.

SUBMISSION: About TEEN WOLF, REPRESENTATION, how NOT GROUNBREAKING the show is and the biggest NO HOMO that there’s ever been.

teenwolfgossip:

About TEEN WOLF, REPRESENTATION, how NOT GROUNBREAKING the show is and the biggest NO HOMO that there’s ever been.

In the SDCC aftermath, we are starting to see some interviews with cast members like Tyler H. and JR and the very Creator himself, Jeff Davis, talking about how inclusive and groundbreaking the show is in terms of LGBT representation. That’s not a new pattern we are seeing, Charlie Carver had already been there himself the past year and Tyler P. as well in the 3B dvd box set, turning “representation” into an usual Teen Wolf’s VANITY POINT.

- I’m not going to talk about the actors believing or not what they are saying (personally I hope they don’t) or about them being interested in the subject enough to critically analize it instead of following the PR directions, because it’s a subjective and sensitive topic, and at the end of the day none of us knows what they really think about it. -

Teen Wolf came into television and fandom carring a big promise, used to win audience’s attention and brownie points from media (as in: good reviews and free advertising).

What I want to openly discuss here, is a show that presents and advertises itself as inclusive and so important in terms of representation to be no less than GROUNDBREAKING.

The problem is, Teen Wolf is so far from groundbreaking that just stating it is, is somehow insulting.

Let’s try to analyze the present situation in representation’s term, shall we?

Teen Wolf Ratings are down 17% this season? http://bit.ly/1r9zChy
What are y’all watching instead?
Really. I want to understand what happened.
ADDENDUM - I should point out that I’ve heard all the theories about the disgruntled fandom. Even if every pissed off person stopped watching - it wouldn’t add up to a 17% drop. I really want to know what you’re watching at 10pm on Mondays instead of Teen Wolf.
ADDENDUM 2 (because I can’t respond to half of you directly) - I get that there is an angry fan faction. I’ll give them responsibility for about half the drop. I get that the Simpsons reruns beat the show on a US holiday Monday. There are all sorts of reasons for that too. I’m trying to get to the heart of where YOU went. What are YOU watching when you used to be watching Teen Wolf.

Oh, my sweet summer child, I really want to give you a satisfying answer because you are always so kind and precious, here and on twitter too.You already know the problems, I know you really do.And you are right, the drop is not about tumbler users’, it’s about casual viewers mostly. The big numbers are made of them, not of us.I know you know about the timeline, the plotholes (Malia and Cora, the biggest of all), the bad characters’ development, the fact that the show never addresses what’s happend in the past and the consequences that should be here, in present time (like Stiles’ possession, Allison death, Derek’s trauma, etc), that the showrunner and the writers made a point about dimissing every criticism or asked us to overlook the problems (so, so, so unprofessional, but I’m not going to add more about this subject), the useless and nonsensical romances made of bad tropes (some of them makes me shiver in disgust), the lack of any built up (Stalia in Eichen House - Jesus, that was disgusting - Dreaden), the emorrhage of the cast, the dismissal of beloved characters due to Davis’ incompetence (Boyd and Danny), the focus on new characters that a very few people cares about to the detriment on the ones we love (like Lydia and Derek’s 3-minutes screen time per episode, that’s SO STUPID), the PR debacle and the shameful use of the sterek fandom for votes, ratings, free press and good buzz about the show, just to humiliate and annihilate said fandom later, the anti-marketing campaign that followed to finally kill this portion of the fandom (really, tell me someone else who managed to censore a CHARITY project, I want to know) because they thought they could replace it with Dylan’s brand new TMR fanbase (surprise motherf**ker: movie delayed from february to september!), the buddy-buddy relationship with really problematic people within the fandom that are know haters and harrasser on twitter (and just so we are clear, I’m NOT talking about Qhuinn at ALL, in fact it’s the opposite) and all the other problems a lot of people poited out since 3A.
But instead of listening, Davis chose to mock, dismiss and ignore his own fandom, and instead of trying to fix real problems he started to write the exact opposite out of spite. He let his pride and arrogance took over, and you can see the results within the ratings.
"Fans don’t write the show". While on one hand the statement is very true, on the other hand it’s even more true that YOU DON’T WRITE AGAINST THEM.
A few examples?
We asked for a timeline and to know the actual age of the characters, he messed up the timeline even more and moked the fan for the age request.
We asked to cover the plotholes, he said we should just overlook them all.
We pointed out how nonsensical Malia is, he said that we should get over it and that if she’s good enough for Stiles and Scott, she should be good enough for us as well (because viewers’ brain and critical sense is something you can compare with two FICTIONAL characters HE writes, of course).
We pointed out how problematic the Eichen House hook up was, and stated that we hoped they didn’t have full sex, instead of back pedal about it he confirmed the full sex scene even if it wasn’t filmed.
We called him out on all the bisexual Stiles’ hint (that he confirmed in a interview), he brought back a lesbian background character and turn her bisexual instead, and then Dylan dismissed the whole thing.
We called him out about killing too many POC and female characters, he brought Braeden back from death (against all logic, yeah, more plot holes!) just to make her a useless love interest and to warm Derek’s bed.
We called him out about Derek losing his alpha status just to make Scott shine, he took away even his werewolfiness (is that even a word?).
We called him out about Derek’s trauma, he made him completely apathetic and OOC (I still hope for double!Derek but I won’t hold my breath about it).
We loved some characters he didn’t expected, he cut their screen time or erased them from the show.
We called him about about Scott character and his development, and about the fact that Scott always took credits for other people actions and never makes choices on his own, he made him bit Liam by accidend and now he turned him into a berseker against his will (I sweat to God, Scott never took a single decision in his whole life, all he does is speak like a politician, what a waste of potential).
We loved something unexpected like Sterek, he erased every single interaction between them in the show, and between the actors outside the show (but first they milked the ship for votes and ratings and free press).
We called him out about lgbt representation and about tokenism, he introduced Mason (Danny 2.0) and erased Danny (gay quota already reached) and then he and the cast proceeded to preen about representation and how grounbreaking the show is in every interview (read this, really).
This is just a little portion, I can go on for hours, but that is not the point. The point is that even causal viewers will eventually catch up with all the problems in the show. In a more bland way, of course, but eventually they will, and this is the day. They won’t point out the problems one by one, they won’t write essays about it, they won’t tear the show apart with amazing analysis. But that doesn’t mean they won’t have a general feeling of disinterest, and when the disinterest will overcome the interest, they simply quit. As in: back to the present. Because casual viewers are not faithful and they will look the other way immediately if what’s on screen isn’t good enough, but at the end of the day what they feel is what we feel, even if it’s a duller version of it.
The fanbase is both- a sounding board (a really powerful one) but it can resonate in a positive way or in a negative oneand- a thermometer, a market survey for freeand should be used exactly like that: to measure the customers’ satisfaction and improve the services.
MTV chose the opposite way: instead of listening, they proceeded to alienate part of the old fanbase to get rid of the unwelcomed people (as in: sterek shipper and older viewers) and to shift the audience to their ideal, younger target. But the quality of the product deteriorated, the positive buzz stopped and a negative one started, and the supposed new audience - both from TMR and MTV repositioning - never came in.In simple words: the marketing strategy failed, a good portion of old fans is long gone, there is no one here to give the show free publicity and positive buzz and to drag new people into the show.
You ask what are we all watching instead. The answer is simple: nothing.
I watch many other tv shows, but I used to watch them alongside with Teen Wolf. It’s not a matter of this OR that.

So, it’s already common knowledge that Teen Wolf reaches a new level of horrible with each passing week. As the new episodes air, the audience only sees how truly terrible the show has gotten.
One of the most devastating things about the way Jeff and his team have thrown away this show, is how they’ve completely ruined the last standing original characters of the show in the process.
DEREK HALE:

Let’s be honest. Derek Hale isn’t Derek Hale anymore.
What happened to the man that absolutely cherished being a werewolf? The man who thought that the bite was a gift? The man who believed his status as a werewolf by birth was a part of his being?
Where did that man go, because right now, he’s turning human and he doesn’t even care. He hasn’t even contacted Deaton as to how and why he’s turning human. He’s not worried. He’s not upset. He doesn’t care.
He hired Braeden to find Kate, the woman who has abused him and tortured him relentlessly and continuously, and he doesn’t even fucking care that Braeden isn’t doing her fucking job.
Derek is horrendously OOC now. His personality has been scrapped. His mannerisms are gone. Right now, Derek just lounges around. He’s creepily chilled and zen, despite everything that’s happening. He doesn’t have a care in the world about anything.
Despite being assaulted, tortured, and raped in the past by women he didn’t know, he’s over there playing high school romance with a murderous mercenary that’s supposed to be finding Kate.
Now, I would say that his personality has changed due to being a PTSD sufferer, but that’s not the reason. It has already been confirmed that Jeff hasn’t written Derek as a character who’s suffering from PTSD, and Hoechlin even said he doesn’t play Derek as being a PTSD sufferer because he knows it wouldn’t be written respectfully within the show.
So, there’s no actual explaination for Derek’s fucked up character. It’s just horrendous writing (like all the other writing), and now Derek Hale has been ruined.
He’s not the same character, and it’s not because he has gone through any actual character development or anything logical like that….the writers have just stopped writing for Derek.

STILES STILINSKI:

Stiles is another character that has been completely ruined. I mean, Jeff and his team of idiots have tried their best to start selling Stiles as this total stud heartbreaker heart-throb, that all the girls want to jump on.
This is part of the reason why all possibility of Stiles being bisexual has been tossed out the window. Because, hey, guys being attracted to guys doesn’t sell and all of the little tween girls that adore Stiles would lose their appetite if Stiles also liked boys too. (ugh).
Stiles has been completely destroyed in order of him to be sold as a heart-throb.
Remember Stiles back in 3a, the boy that stopped things from progressing any further with Heather because he didn’t have a condom with him? Yeah, Stiles isn’t that boy anymore.
Apparently, Stiles is now the kind of guy that’ll fuck you with no condom, in the basement of an insane asylum after knowing you for about an hour. So hot. So romantic. What a lover boy.
Okay, and what happened to the boy that was fearless? What happened to the boy that stood up to people that were being assholes to his friends? What happened to the boy that didn’t care how “weak” he was, he still went toe-to-toe with supernatural beings if they were being shitty?
Remember when Stiles jumped in a cop car with Derek, who at the time was a known werewolf and suspected murderer?
And what about:
the boy who punched Jackson in the face for being an asshole
the boy who straight up told the alpha (Peter) who was trying to murder him that he wasn’t afraid of him
the boy who yelled in Chris Argent’s face for what the Argents did to Derek’s family
the boy who stood up to Gerard Argent
the boy who straight up said he’d shove a branch of mountain ash up Ethan’s (murderous alpha werewolf’s) ass, after being indirectly threatened by him
Yeah, what happened to that Stiles, because he’s not in the show anymore. Now, we have a Stiles that legit let’s Malia (his abusive piece of shit girlfriend) walk all over him.
He cowers when she growls at him. He allows her to threaten him. He allows himself to be made uncomfortable by her. He allows her to be a total asshole to his friends, and doesn’t even think of defending them or telling her to either shut the fuck up or get out of his life.

LYDIA MARTIN:

Let’s talk about Lydia, a character that I actually enjoyed back in seasons 1-2, but she began to get extremely annoying as the show progressed. And honestly, it’s not her fault. Like, 99% of the problems with Teen Wolf and the characters is because of Jeff and the writers.
Back when 3a started up, they decided to heavily hint at romantic Stydia, despite Dylan saying that Stiles had moved on. Because of this, Jeff turned Lydia into Stiles’ little pet and prize.
Over the course of 3a-3b, Lydia quickly became the character that clung to Stiles and followed him around.
Lydia became a weak, watered down character that only seemed to cry and scream when danger was lurking around. She also became the damsel in distress that constantly needed to be saved, or clued in on what was happening. Not only that, but she just seemed to walk around and take barked orders from Stiles.
Now, as s4 has rolled around, it’s apparent that the writers don’t even bother writing for Lydia anymore. She’s getting less and less screen-time and her importance to the show is dwindling.
Why? Because she’s not a love interest for Stiles anymore.
Stiles doesn’t want her anymore. He’s not interested in being with her. His crush on her has ended. So where does Jeff think that leaves Lydia?
Well, he’s decided that since Stiles has moved onto Malia (ew), Lydia isn’t worth having an actual story-line and purpose any longer. He’s stopped writing for her, and has chosen to focus on Malia more than on Lydia because Malia is Stiles’ latest squeeze.

SCOTT MCCALL:

Now, a lot of you probably already know my feelings towards Scott. I think he’s a boring character, and has been since the start of the show. Mostly because he’s a cookie-cutter character. He never does wrong, always succeeds, and is always looked at as the hero no matter what he does.
So, in a way, I supposed he’s not ruined. Mostly because there wasn’t anything to really ruin from the beginning.
Nevertheless, it’s not like Jeff is actually writing for Scott. Scott gets the same treatment which every passing season. It’s the same tired story of: “Something bad is out to get us. I have to save everybody. I don’t want to turn into a monster. I want to live a normal life.”
Not only that, but Jeff had Scott continuously bash and mock Derek’s alpha skills and the way he carried himself as an alpha, yet, now Scott’s over here asking Derek for guidance and help with how to be an alpha?
Okay, whatever.

Unfortunately, I guess we had to say goodbye to these characters eventually. I still can’t manage to understand why Jeff chose to ruin them, though.

colethewolf:

So, it’s already common knowledge that Teen Wolf reaches a new level of horrible with each passing week. As the new episodes air, the audience only sees how truly terrible the show has gotten.

One of the most devastating things about the way Jeff and his team have thrown away this show, is how they’ve completely ruined the last standing original characters of the show in the process.
